I am = pleased to=20 announce the launch of the new Galter Health SmartLibrary

(HSL). = The=20 library=E2=80=99s Web site is more than a redesign. The Galter HSL is = a

smarter = way to=20 get connected to health information that is most important = to

you, = the=20 user.

The = Galter HSL=20 custom-

izes = and=20 personalizes library

resources with a=20 minimum

of = effort on your=20 part. If

you = have saved=20 your login information during a previous Galter Web site = session,

you = will see your=20 personal library link immediately whenever you make a = connec-

tion to = the=20 Galter Library. If you are on the university network or when you=20 link

from an = off-campus connection, right in the middle of the home page you will=20 see

a = message like,=20 =E2=80=9CIs this Jim Shedlock?=E2=80=9D accompanied with a clickable = =E2=80=9CYes=E2=80=9D but-

ton. = With one=20 click you have access to resources =E2=80=94 e-journals, e-books and = Web

sites = =E2=80=94 that are=20 important to your personal research or clinical interests. = These

resources have=20 been pre-selected for you by the library staff and are based on = the

user = profile that=20 you completed when you registered for online services from = the

Galter=20 Library.

What if = you want=20 to expand or change your HSL? Simply go to the new Custom-

ize = button at the=20 top of the HSL page and click the feature you want to = change.

You can = add=20 keywords to your current awareness search or add or delete = journal

titles. = With the=20 new Customize button, you are in control of how much of the

available online=20 scholarly literature you want to access immediately on your = li-

brary = web page.=20 All changes made in the HSL are instantaneous.

Your = HSL also=20 gives you a range of news services. Besides Library News, you = will

see = headlines for=20 current health topics In the News. Just click on the = headline

from an = online=20 newspaper, alerting service or other media resource that you = want

to read = (though=20 some resources may want you to register first) and go to the = actual

article. Another=20 important feature is the automatic link to full text journal = ar-

ticles = from the=20 major journals in your discipline. Stay Current gives you = immedi-

ate = access to=20 the articles highlighted on your library Web site. No need to=20 search

MEDLINE or=20 browse through the library=E2=80=99s growing collection of e-journals. = Just

click = and read=20 the important information from your preferred journals.

Another feature=20 of the new HSL is the Quick Search. This tool helps you find = the

location of your=20 topic among most of the available resources in the growing = Galter

collection.=20 Searching by keyword, the Quick Search opens a new web page = for

each = selected=20 resource. What you see is a list of articles or documents that=20 contain

your = keyword, a=20 new bibliography to help you track the literature important = to

you. = Again, you=20 can customize those resources you routinely search by using = the

Customize button=20 in the Quick Search feature or in the main Customize menu.

The = new File=20 Cabinet feature stores your personal collection of = web-based

LibQUAL+ Survey=20 Report:

Improving Galter=20 Library Quality

In the = Spring,=20 2003 Galter Library users were asked to participate in the LibQUAL+ = survey for=20 the third year in a row. LibQUAL+

is a = survey=20 instrument designed to measure the quality of a library=E2=80=99s = services. The 2003=20 results showed an overall improvement from

the = previous year=20 though the caveat is that fewer users completed the survey.

In 2003 = the=20 LibQUAL+ survey consisted of 25 questions given to more than 300 = libraries of=20 all types in the U.S., Canada, and some

European=20 countries. An additional five questions were also included that = pertained just=20 to the health sciences environment. Galter

respondents=20 included 237 users: 3 marked as undergraduate students, 96 graduate and = MD students, 69 faculty, 5 library staff and=20 64

medical = school=20 staff. In 2002 there were 457 responding users.

The = LibQUAL+=20 survey measures a library=E2=80=99s quality by asking users to mark each = question for=20 their minimum, desired and perceived

expectations of=20 the service or library feature being measured. The difference, or gap, = between=20 minimum expectation and perceived

reality = indicates=20 a measure of quality.

Overall, the 2003=20 Galter scores show some improvement over last year. In general, = responding users=20 scored the library positively

across = all survey=20 questions; this was not the case in 2002, so improvement has been = achieved in=20 specific indicators.

The = results of=20 the 2003 survey showed that there was only one indicator of = dissatisfaction=20 across all responding users: the journal

collection. The=20 level of dissatisfaction, however, is minimal, a -0.01 difference = between=20 minimum expectations and perceived reality.

This = indicator is=20 not new; the journal collection has been consistently identified as a = service=20 quality problem over the past two years

in the = LibQUAL+=20 surveys and has been frequently mentioned as a problem in all other = formal and=20 informal reviews of the library=E2=80=99s

service. Given=20 that the score was very minimal, this may indicate that users are seeing = more=20 improvements as library staff work on

addressing=20 collection quality problems.

Science=20 Direct (Elsevier)

A year = ago, the=20 Galter Library along with the Brennemann and

Priztker=20 libraries at Children=E2=80=99s Memorial Hospital and the = Health

Learning Center=20 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital joined to-

gether = as a=20 group and licensed Science Direct. This license gives

the = three=20 institutions online access to any Elsevier journal that we

had in = print. We=20 are pleased to an-

nounce = that the=20 NU Science Direct

group = has grown=20 over the summer to

include the=20 Evanston Campus librar-

ies as = well as=20 the Pritzker Law Library. This means that any Elsevier

journal title=20 subscribed to by any of these libraries is now avail-

able = on both=20 campuses. For Galter users, this expansion of over

400 = titles means=20 direct access to more chemistry and biological

sciences titles=20 without using interlibrary loan. Additionally, the

group = will be=20 selecting new Elsevier journal titles with duplica-

tion = funds. To=20 assist with the selection of new titles, Science Di-

rect = has given=20 Northwestern online access to all Science Direct

titles = until=20 December 31

. We = encourage=20 you to go to http//

:www.sciencedirect.com to view the journal titles and let us=20 know

what = new titles=20 you would like us to select beginning January

2004.

Kluwer=20 Academic Publishers

Another exciting=20 new consortium venture for the Galter Library

is = access to the=20 complete Kluwer online collection. Through an

offer = from the=20 CIC (Big Ten) libraries consortium, we will have

access = to over=20 600 new titles, many of

which = are in the=20 health sciences. These

titles = will be=20 available on both campuses.

Links = to=20 relevant titles will be included in the catalog, on the

library Web=20 site, and through PubMed and Ovid.

Back=20 Issues

During = faculty=20 focus groups, users have expressed an interest in

online = back-issues of journals. This fall, the library purchased = back

issues = to Nature=20 and Annual Reviews. Nature will be available

online = going=20 back 20 years. Annual Reviews is now online back

to = volume 1 for=20 titles in the series currently available from the

library=20 (medicine, neuroscience, genetics, immunology, etc.). In

addition, the=20 Journal of Biochemistry is now available from 1905-

present,=20 compliments of the American Society of Biochemistry

and=20 Microbiology: ASBMB, the association that publishes the

journal.=20

Along = with seven=20 other public and private Illinois academic li-

braries, the=20 Galter Health Sciences Library has received funding

through = the=20 Illinois Cooperative Collection Management Pro-

gram = (ICCMP) for=20 FiscalYear 2004. ICCMP in turn receives its

funding = from the=20 Illinois Board of Higher Education. As part of

the=20 =E2=80=9CBiotechnology Collection Partnership, = 2

Year=20 (revised)=E2=80=9D,

the = Galter=20 Library will receive $5000 to acquire books in the area

of = Molecular=20 Medicine and $2000 to acquire books in the area of

Genetic = Counseling. Library Administration has made the com-

mitment = of=20 collection responsibility to fully process the materials

within = six months=20 of receipt and to make them available not only

to = Northwestern=20 University affiliates, but also to any Illinois in-

stitution=20 subscribing to the Illinois statewide interlibrary loan = code.

Faculty Focus=20 Groups

The = Galter=20 Library conducted two simultaneous focus groups with approximately 20 = faculty on=20 August 20, 2003 during the lunch

hour. = The primary=20 topic was ways to improve remote access to the electronic library. An = additional=20 topic included the quality of the

journal = collection and other electronic resources. The remote access topic was = chosen=20 based on the low marks received from respond-

ing = faculty=20 during the spring 2003 LibQUAL+ survey measuring the quality of Galter = Library=20 services.

Most of = the=20 faculty attending the lunch discussion said they had very little problem = accessing the electronic Galter Library remotely

from = home or from=20 an off-campus office. Comments indicated overall satisfaction with the = way=20 e-resources are organized and

accessed. Since=20 most faculty prefer using PubMed for subject searching, faculty in the = focus=20 groups commented favorably on the

library=E2=80=99s efforts=20 to make links directly to full-text articles right at the PubMed = citation. That=20 does not mean there are no problems.

Occasionally,=20 faculty find a road block for a particular publisher. The obstacle can = occur=20 while using PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE or

browsing through=20 the e-journal list at the Galter web site. Faculty recommended that = suggestion=20 boxes be placed at available pages so

it is = easy to=20 report when a blockage occurs.

Other = problems=20 that faculty report include not getting e-journals available in = Evanston;=20 forgetting to use the Northwestern link to

PubMed; = forgetting to login to the Galter Library to be identified as = Northwestern=20 faculty; and not accessing an e-resource because a

maximum = number of=20 users has been reached. Library staff are aware of these problems and = are=20 working on fixes. The biggest fix is

constant=20 education to remind all users that resources are available by following = the=20 rules for access. These rules are mandated by the

licenses the=20 library signs when acquiring e-resources.

One of = the major=20 problems faculty pointed out in the focus groups is the lack of = resources that=20 they expect to find at Galter. While

accessing=20 e-resources is said to be better here than in other libraries where = faculty had=20 privileges, the lack of a range of journals is most

noticeable.=20 Another significant problem is the need for more electronic backfiles = for=20 journals. Faculty increasingly want the conve-

nience = of=20 accessing older literature while online.

Another = topic=20 that was raised in the focus groups is faculty reaction to open archives = of=20 biomedical journals, including such projects

as the = Public=20 Library of Sciences (PLoS) and PubMed Central. Faculty were very = receptive to an=20 institutional repository for their

journal = articles=20 and data. They really liked the idea of the PLoS. They would rather have = an=20 educational institution support this type

of a = project -=20 storing faculty articles and data - because you do not know how long a = company=20 will remain viable and what happens to

that = data if the=20 company goes out of business. Faculty recognize that higher education = has been=20 around for a long time and is more

viable = than a=20 commercial enterprise. Other faculty noted that getting the PLoS = operational=20 will be difficult. Some commented that

its = going to take=20 a while to catch on, or it will be five years until it is important = enough to=20 garner much attention. One faculty member

commented that=20 impact factors are an important indicator of journal quality and that = faculty=20 are more likely to want to publish in

high = impact=20 journals than in something like PLoS.

Overall, the=20 faculty focus groups provide more anecdotal information about what is = important=20 to users. They provide insights that are

not = easily=20 obtainable via surveys and do not show up in quantitative measures. = Galter=20 Library administration hopes to offer more such

focus = groups as=20 another means of listening to users and assessing the value and quality = of=20 library services.

HemoSurf is a=20 reference guide for learning how to identify blood components and = interpret=20 blood smears and bone marrow samples.

The = Learning=20 Modules are designed to teach students step-by-step how to examine and = compare=20 cells, recognize cell abnormalities,

and = clinically=20 assess hematologic diseases. The Reference Modules are used to easily = access all=20 the units in the program including

leukocytes,=20 erythrocytes, platelets and bone marrow.

Clinical=20 Human Embryology

Follows = the=20 development of human embryo from a single-cell fertilized egg to birth. = You can=20 learn about development in three

different ways:=20 cases, subjects and by viewing the timeline. A case-based approach = allows you to=20 view topics such as spina bifida and

Goldenhar=20 Syndrome. Subject-based access allows you to see topic such as head and = neck=20 development and development of the eye.

The = timeline=20 approach allows you to see everything that is happening during a = particular week=20 of development.

Northwestern=20 University Joins BioMed Central

Northwestern=20 University has recently become an institutional member of BioMed = Central,=20 through a joint agreement with Galter

Library, the=20 Science and Engineering Library and the University Library. This is = great news=20 for all of our life science and medical

researchers for a=20 number of reasons.

BioMed = Central is=20 committed to its policy of providing free, full text access to all = original=20 research papers published in any of its 80+

online = journals=20 covering all areas of biology and medicine, and any journals that will = be added=20 over time. The resources available to the

The = workshop=20 provided practical information about GenBank, RefSeq, LocusLink, Map = Viewer, the=20 Cn3D Structure Viewer, and

other = research=20 tools maintained at the NCBI. Techniques on the effective use of Entrez = and the=20 Basic Local Alignment Search Tool

(BLAST), NCBI=E2=80=99s=20 two main database search tools, were also covered. Attendees were = particularly=20 enthused at the opportunity for

hands-on practice=20 with these sophisticated research tools under the guidance of experts = from=20 NCBI.

Galter = Library=20 previously hosted this event back in 1999. With the increasing = importance of=20 molecular sequencing tools in biological

and = biomedical=20 research and the popularity of the workshop in July, we intend to offer = similar=20 educational programming in the near

Mobile = Classroom=20 Has Arrived

Galter = Library is=20 pleased to announce that, beginning in October 2003, we will start = offering=20 educational workshops using our new

mobile = classroom.=20 The mobile classroom consists of five laptops and an LCD projector. = Taking=20 advantage of wireless network access

throughout the=20 library, we will be able to hold classes in any of the library = conference rooms,=20 enabling more flexible scheduling. With

the use = of=20 laptops, workshop participants will gain valuable hands-on experience in = the use=20 of software applications such as EndNote

as well = as=20 database search interfaces such as Ovid MEDLINE. We are very excited at = the new=20 possibilities afforded by the mobile

classroom.

Galter = Library=20 offers several educational opportunities each month=E2=80=94from = regularly scheduled=20 classes to by-request individualized

In 2003 = the=20 student analysis indicates only positive scores, a marked improvement = over last=20 year. Previously, convenient business

hours = were a=20 significant indicator of quality for students. In 2001 and 2002 the = Galter=20 Library was marked for low quality on this

topic. = For 2003,=20 the score for convenient business hours was 0.36 (minimum =3D 6.55; = desired =3D=20 8.32; perceived =3D 6.91).

Other = indicators=20 of dissatisfaction as marked in the 2003 survey results are revealed = only in the=20 faculty analysis of the scores.

Faculty marked=20 the library for low quality in the following areas: print and/or = electronic=20 journals required for work; printed materials

needed = for work;=20 e-resources needed for work; timely document delivery; a library web = site=20 enabling me to locate info on my own; and

making = electronic resources accessible from home or office.

While = the above=20 questions come from the main survey, a separate set of five questions = specific=20 to the health sciences environment were

also = asked. One=20 topic from this set asked for perceptions on =E2=80=9Celectronic = resources matching my=20 information needs=E2=80=9D. Here, the FSM

faculty scored=20 the Galter Library low in quality. The minimum score was 7.36; the = desired score=20 was 8.61; and the perceived score was

7.30. = This=20 creates an adequacy score of -0.06.

To = reflect the=20 total picture, there are several areas in the survey results where the = faculty=20 perceive library service as exceeding their

desired=20 expectations. These indicators all relate to the library as a physical = facility.=20 Though fewer faculty are using the physical library,

preferring the=20 electronic library to be their primary access to scholarly literature, = faculty=20 may be reflecting their use of the library as

teacher via the=20 problem-based learning portion of the medical school curriculum or = reflecting=20 the comments and perceptions of the

students they=20 teach.

Feinberg staff=20 continue to report overall satisfaction with the quality of library = services=20 they receive.

An = advantage of=20 participating in the LibQUAL+ survey is comparison with peers. This = occurred for=20 the first time in the 2002 survey

when = 35 academic=20 health sciences libraries used the LibQUAL+ survey along with the Galter = Library. The 2002 peer comparison was

not a = positive=20 one for the Galter Library. For most of the dimensions surveyed, the = Galter=20 Library was marked at the low end of the

peer = group. In=20 2003, analysis shows a marked improvement, however, there is a marked = difference=20 in the number and composition

of the = peer=20 group in 2002 and 2003. So it is only in very general terms that the = Galter=20 Library has improved some aspects of its service

program as=20 compared to other academic health sciences libraries.

The = three-year=20 participation in using the LibQUAL+ survey has been important for the = Galter=20 Library. Key weaknesses have been

identified using=20 this one tool for measuring service quality. Coupled with other = quantitative=20 data and anecdotal comments from focus

groups, Galter=20 staff have been able to review services and make plans to improve them. = An=20 important byproduct of using the

LibQUAL+ survey=20 is a reminder to Galter staff to look for ways to assess what we do for = users.=20 Another important lesson is the value

of = listening to=20 users. Giving the customer what he or she wants is an important business = dictum=20 and it works for libraries too. The

Galter = Library=20 has opted not to participate in the 2004 use of the LibQUAL+ survey but = will=20 consider it again closer to the library=E2=80=99s

university-mandated=20 program review.
