In what = soon will=20 be known as the Northwestern Vesalius, Drs. Malcolm H.
Hast, = professor=20 emeritus, Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck = Surgery,
Feinberg School=20 of Medicine, and Daniel H. Garrison, professor of classics, = De-
partment of=20 Classics, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, are currently = en-
gaged = in=20 producing the complete English annotated translation of Andreas=20 Vesalius=E2=80=99
De = human=20 corporis fabrica, On the fabric of the human body. Vesalius=E2=80=99 = work=20 is
considered a=20 monument in medical literature, being the first =E2=80=9Cmodern=E2=80=9D = text on
anatomy.
The = work of these=20 two Northwestern scholars is unique
for = several=20 reasons. Never before has a complete English
translation been=20 made of both editions of the entire
Fabrica.=20 One recent translation by two New Zealand
scholars 1
concentrates only=20 on Vesalius=E2=80=99 first edition of
1543 = and only on=20 his first two books (the original title
contains seven=20 books or sections of the whole). In addi-
tion, = these=20 scholars translated only the main text, with
few = footnotes and=20 annotations. The Northwestern
Vesalius exceeds=20 this work by translating everything =E2=80=94
text, = footnotes,=20 notations on illustrations, etc. =E2=80=94 from
both = editions,=20 the second published in 1555. Thoemmes
Press, = Bristol,=20 U.K., will be the publishers of the print
edition, which is=20 anticipated to be published around 2007
when = the complete=20 translation is finished.
The = Galter=20 Library is participating in the project through the loan of its=20 original
copy of = the=20 second edition; a facsimile version of the first edition is also located = in
the = Galter=20 Library=E2=80=99s Special Collections Department. By placing the = library=E2=80=99s
copy of = the=20 original second edition in Evanston at the University Library=E2=80=99s=20 Deering
Collection, we=20 assist the scholars in their translation effort by conveniently=20 locat-
ing the = volume=20 closer to their worksite.
What is = also=20 making the Northwestern Vesalius unique is the use of current=20 infor-
mation = technologies to bring the work to life again in the=20 21
 st
century.=20 Malcolm
Hast = and Dan=20 Garrison, along with a team of information specialists from = the
University=20 Library and Academic Technologies, have published the English=20 trans-
lation = of book=20 one on the web at http://vesalius.northwestern.e= du/. In = addition
to = providing the=20 text, the online version adds the special technological = touches
that = make=20 electronic publishing so unique. Using a frame structure, a table=20 of
contents appears=20 in a left-hand column, actual text of the translation appears = in
the = center of=20 the page and footnotes appear in a special bottom frame. = Linkages
between text,=20 illustrations and footnotes are the hallmark of web-based = publish-

We = have over 45=20 anatomical models available in the LRC. Re-
cently = we added=20 some new ones to the collection, including: a
human = heart that=20 illustrates the musculature and large blood
vessels, with=20 both ventricles and atria open to reveal the valves;
a = life-size=20 human brain model which divides into eight parts,
including the=20 medulla and cerebellum; and a muscular model
of the = arm=20 combining the skeleton and muscles with a func-
tioning elbow=20 joint.
See = the=20 accompanying photographs for more illustrations of our
collection. All=20 anatomical models are in-library use items. How-
ever, = they may=20 be checked out by faculty for use in class. Please

Evidence Based=20 Medicine =E2=80=93 EBM =E2=80=93 has been a buzz phrase in the medical = and information=20 professions for the last decade or so. EBM
is the = process of=20 locating evidence in the medical literature that assists in = decision-making=20 regarding practical clinical questions.
Rather = than=20 settle for a couple of articles that address your topic in an anecdotal = or=20 perfunctory fashion, using the EBM process
enables = you to=20 find top-notch evidence to support clinical practice and patient=20 care.

E-Journals=20 list updated
Recently, the=20 library held focus groups with faculty to discuss the library=E2=80=99s = collection.=20 During the course of these conversations,
electronic access=20 to resources was a recurring theme. Not only were faculty interested in = plans=20 for new titles and back issues online,
they = were also=20 interested in how e-resources were presented on the library website. = Based on=20 this feedback, the library recently
implemented the=20 inclusion of dates of coverage on the list of e-journals so that the = user no=20 longer has to click on =E2=80=9Cmore info=E2=80=9D to
determine what=20 holdings the library has for an e-journal title. Please keep sending us = your=20 feedback so that we can continue to
enhance = the=20 website to meet your needs.
E-Journals=20 list greatly expanded
One of = the=20 library=E2=80=99s goals this year was to provide online access to every = journal we=20 currently subscribe to in print. At this point, the
library = has 85%=20 of its titles online, so we are very close to meeting our goal. The = primary=20 obstacle that keeps us from reaching 100%
includes=20 publisher restrictions. In some cases, publishers restrict the number of = computers that can have online access; publishers have
opted = to not=20 provide online access to libraries, but focus on individual users; and = some=20 publishers have simply not produced online
access = to their=20 titles. We will continue to monitor our list of titles not yet available = online.=20 If your favorite title is not available online,

American=20 Medical Association (AMA) Journal Licensing chal-
lenges
This = spring, the=20 American Medical Association surprised many
medical = libraries=20 with their abrupt change in licensing. Many li-
braries,=20 including Galter Library, lost access to AMA titles such as
JAMA and=20 Archives of Internal Medicine. We learned, after the
fact, = that we=20 would have to sign a new license and pay signifi-
cantly = more money=20 to reinstate access. Many members of the
medical = library=20 community complained to the AMA and an advi-
sory = committee of=20 medical librarians was formed. James Shedlock
and = Linda Walton=20 are both members of the advisory committee
which = has met=20 once so far. The purpose of the committee is to
advise = the AMA on=20 issues such as pricing, timing, types of access,
and = other=20 important factors libraries face when selecting and
managing=20 electronic resources.
New=20 databases
The = library now=20 provides access to new databases that may be of
interest to our=20 users: American Speech and Hearing Association
database and=20 Mental Measurements Yearbook. Links to these data-
bases = can be=20 found on the library website under =E2=80=9CDatabases.=E2=80=9D = If
you = would like=20 training or support in using these or other data-
bases = supported=20 by the library, please contact the reference desk
at=20 503-8109.
Spotlight on=20 Psych Resources
During = the past=20 year, The Galter Library has placed an emphasis
on = obtaining=20 quality psychology/psychiatry resources for our us-
ers. We = have=20 added two new databases, and a number of e-books
and = e-journals to=20 our collection. All the resources are available
from = the library=20 website. The resources are described below.
Mental=20 Measurements Yearbook: This resource contains the most
recent=20 descriptive information and critical reviews of new and
revised = tests=20 from the Buros Institute=E2=80=99s 9th through the 15th = Year-
books. = It also=20 includes full text information about and reviews of
all=20 English-language standardized tests covering educational = skills,
personality,=20 vocational aptitude, psychology, and related areas as
included in the=20 printed =E2=80=9CMental Measurements Yearbooks.=E2=80=9D = Cov-
erage: = 1985 =E2=80=93=20 present.
Health and=20 Psychosocial Instruments: This resource provides infor-
mation = on=20 measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, inter-
view = schedules,=20 checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manu-
als, = rating=20 scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests)
in the = health=20 fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behav-
ior, = and library=20 and information science. Coverage: 1985 =E2=80=93 present.
American=20 Psychological Association Journal Collection: This = collec-
tion = of 47 APA=20 titles is now available to our users electronically
with = links to=20 databases such as PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, and
PsycINFO. Some=20 highlighted titles include: Journal of Consulting
and = Clincal=20 Psychology, American Psychologist, American Journal=20 of
Orthopsychiatry,=20 and more. Coverage: 1988-present.
Psych books=20 online: Galter has collected some of the best psych
textbooks for=20 our users including the DSM-IV-TR. Below are the

of the = page=20 controls special access to the
many=20 illustrations that have been scanned
into = the web=20 site. Separate indexes exist for illustrations listed by
name = or body=20 region. Each illustration view can be magnified
up or = down in=20 order to reveal Vesalius=E2=80=99 labeling of various ana-
tomical=20 structures. Special green-colored text provides context
for=20 understanding Greek lettering and accents via a translation
guide = linked at=20 the website home page.
The = translation=20 effort reveals many accomplishments. In addi-
tion = to=20 translating medieval Greek, Latin and Hebrew =E2=80=94 = Vesalius
used = all three=20 languages =E2=80=94 into modern English, there is also the
scholarly effort=20 to understand what Vesalius is saying about hu-
man = anatomy. Dr.=20 Hast=E2=80=99s contribution is to make clear the sci-
ence = of what=20 Vesalius is saying. Word for word translation needs
to be = reconciled=20 with what is presently known about human
anatomy as well=20 as what we understand Vesalius to have known at
the = time of his=20 writing. Dr. Hast=E2=80=99s challenge is to interpret = Vesalius
in = order to=20 produce a readable text that can still speak to = today=E2=80=99s
medical student=20 and physician. All parts of the body, bones,
muscles, nerves,=20 arteries, etc. are identified and labelled with
modern = terminology in Latin (nomina anatomica); in = addition,
historical and=20 clinical footnotes have been added for increased
textual=20 value.
Overall, this=20 web site points out the enormous accomplishment
that = is=20 occurring in this project: classical translating assisting = medi-
cal=20 understanding of anatomy. Technology adds value to the = schol-
arship = at hand=20 by bringing this important historical work to the
desktop.=20

Special=20 Programming at Galter

Galter = Library=20 recently delivered informational programs on two sepa-
rate=20 occasions=E2=80=94Medical Information Day and Alumni Day. As = part
of = National=20 Library Week, Galter Library celebrated Medical Infor-
mation = Day on=20 Friday, April 11. Library staff demonstrated two new
resources,=20 MedWeaver, a clinical decision-making support tool = from
Ovid=20 Technologies, and Faculty of 1000, a current awareness tool=20 for
biological=20 sciences literature produced by BioMed Central. Candy,
stuffed = animals,=20 and other promotional materials provided by ven-
dors = were popular=20 at the information station, set up in the library
atrium.
On = Alumni Day,=20 Friday, April 25, an eager group of alumni took part
in a = workshop=20 highlighting the Galter Library website, NUcat, and
PubMed. = The=20 participating medical school alumni, representing classes
from = the 1940=E2=80=99s,=20 50=E2=80=99s, 60=E2=80=99s, and 70=E2=80=99s, proved to be computer = savvy and
up to = the task,=20 challenging librarians with thought-provoking ques-
tions. = Our thanks=20 go out to all who participated in the programs as
well as = the=20 program organizers!
